Ax-les-Thermes is situated 2300 ft. up in the Midi-Pyrenees in the south of France – close to Andorra and the Spanish border. It is beautifully surrounded by lush mountains, meadows and rivers.
The town is besides from being a mountain-spa-town, and famous for its many warm sulphur springs, also the main starting point for walking holidays in the Pyrenees Mountain.

From here you will have access to the ridges of the lower hills, as well as the high peaks, which leads towards glacial lakes and rugged terrain. The most popular areas include: Col de Puymorens, the Col de Pailheres and the Ariege Pyrenees.
The Pyrenees are serious mountains, and the weather shifts rapidly, so treat them with respect. Always check the weather forecasts before you venture out and make sure you are well prepared and equipped. If you are not used to mountain walking, do yourself and the rescue team a favor: get an experienced guide!

Exploring the Pyrenees by foot is rewarding for bird-watchers who are likely to see vultures and eagles, and if plants are your thing, you can find more than 3.000 species of flora.

Besides from walking in breathtaking surroundings the area of Ax-les-Thermes has a lot more to offer. Being so close to Andorra – crossing the border for shopping or a visit to the casino is a possibility. So is visiting the castle at Montsegur approximately 40km away.

When you are staying in Ax-les-Thermes it is almost a must to dip your body in the Bassin des Ladres, the hot sulphurous water pool, which is said to have healing powers.

Getting to Ax-les-Thermes can be done by road or train. The railway station is on avenue Delcassé and you can get direct night train from Paris. The nearest airports are Toulouse Blagnac and Carcassonne.
